Not many horses remain competitive over eight seasons but that is just what the aptly named SOUND (GER) did - successful at his two-year-old debut and racing right through till ten, along the way winning nine races (including two runnings of the Gr.2 Zipping Stakes) and finishing in the placings at Gr.1 level on three occasions.

 

A classy stayer who amassed in excess of $2 million in stakes, Sound is the ideal horse for the broodmare owner wanting to breed toughness into their stock and he has an exciting pedigree with his sire - the two times German Horse Of The Year Lando - another great example of durability.

Twice a Listed winner at two, a two times Gr.1 winner at three and again at four, he won another three races at the elite level at five - seeing off his outstanding career with success in one of the world's biggest races the Gr.1 Japan Cup.

Doing a great job at stud, so well represented by 28 stakes winners (seven in Gr.1 company) amongst his 326 winners from 512 runners, Lando had eight runners in Australia - the others including the Gr.2 Herbert Power Stakes winner Shahwardi and the Gr.3 Kingston Town Stakes winner Prince Cheri.

Like the great stallions Danehill and Sir Tristram, Lando is line-bred to his own family with his fourth dam Lis also the dam of his sire Acatenango's grandsire Literat.

Such line-breeding gives a horse genetic strength and Sound is a grandson of a mare with the same pattern - she being bred on a 5 X 3 cross of her own third dam Vali - the other strain being her French Derby winning son Val de Loir.

This is one of the world's great families with Sound able to boast amongst his relations the likes of Sadler's Wells, Nureyev, Fairy King and Thatching.

Line-breeding to this prolific family has proven extremely successful the world over - making members of each of those sire lines great prospects for Sound.

Sadler's Wells and Fairy King line mares also provide for a cross of the Kentucky Oaks heroine Lalun (dam of Bold Reason and Never Bend) who is one of the great modern day line-breeding forces.

Both of those lines - as well as Nureyev and Thatching - also result in a cross of the Epsom Oaks heroine Commotion - dam of Aristophanes and Combat.

There have been other members of Sound's family at stud, such as Fiorente (whose sire Monsun is bred on a Dschingis Khan/Surumu cross - the opposite to Lando), Northern Meteor and Smart Missile.

Being a grandson of Fairy King, Northern Meteor is already line-bred to Sound's family and daughters of his son Deep Field are also great prospects for Sound - his dam being a granddaughter of Gone West who combines so very well with his close relation Atan, great grandsire of Lando's dam.

Smart Missile meanwhile is a member of the Danehill sire line and for any stallion to succeed in Australia, they have to have something in common with him - and Sound certainly does with his dam sire Exit To Nowhere being bred on a 3 X 3 cross of his own third dam Almahmoud with Halo the other strain.

And Almahmoud is the grandam of Northern Dancer and the fourth dam of Danehill... another wonderful family to line-breed to. In this regard Street Cry line mares are also of great interest as his sire Machiavellian (son of a Halo mare) shares the same third dam as Danehill  - Almahmoud's daughter Natalma. Note also that Machiavellian is the dam sire of Shamardal. And dam sire of Lando's dual Gr.3 winner Calvados Blues.

Several branches of the Danehill sire line suit Sound - namely Rock Of Gibraltar (his third dam River Lady is the dam of Exit To Nowhere's grandsire Riverman), Redoute's Choice (his dam sire Canny Lad has strong Lady Josephine family influence as does Sound), Commands and Danewin
(descendants of Lady Josephine) and Fastnet Rock (carries a rare strain of High Perch, half- brother to Acatenango's dam sire Aggressor).

 

Sound's pedigree is also inclusive of good Concertina, Marchetta and Gondolette family influences - which gives him plenty in common with the mighty Sir Tristram, another great line for him. Including members of the Zabeel branch... that outstanding stallion's dam is bred on a 6 X 6 cross of Simon's Shoes, ancestress of Sound.

She appears in Zabeel's dam Lady Giselle via Nureyev and another strain of Val de Loir - a horse with whom Zabeel loves as a line-breeding force; combining with more of him in the pedigrees of 77 stakes winners including 17 Gr.1 winners.

Daughters and descendants of Zabeel's grandson Lonhro also match up well - his sire Octagonal is a descendant of Lady Josephine and his dam brings in a strain of Aristophanes. Of particular interest are daughters of Pierro - he has both Nureyev and Sadler's Wells and he is a descendant of the Irish Oaks winner Djebellica whose Prix de l'Arc de Triomphe winning grandson Bon Mot features in Lando's pedigree. Lando's Herbert Power Stakes winner Shahwardi is line-bred to Djebellica.

I Am Invincible has proven to be a prolific influence in recent times and his pedigree is strongly influenced by the Gibside Fairy family with Danzig, Invincible Spirit, Bletchingly and Rockefella all being members... as is Lando. Plus I Am Invincible picks up extremely well on strains of his own ancestress Chelandry - and Sound's dam boasts a couple.
 

Chelandry is also the ancestress of the Sadler's Wells horse High Chaparral - and mares by his son Toronado are a nice match for Sound, allowing for crosses of the great mares Lalun, Mixed Marriage and Relance.

Last Tycoon (dam sire of Lando's dual Gr.3 winner Ostland) line horses match up well too - his Irish Derby winning second dam sire Sayajirao combines well with strains of his Epsom Derby winning brother Dante who is in Sound's dam. And, like Sound, Last Tycoon has strong Nearco
family influence. As does Star Way - and he is the dam sire of Fairy King's best son Encosta de Lago.
